Fernco Pipe Doctor first to achieve WRc Approved status

[11/05/2011]

It is said that pipe lining technology was featured on Tomorrow’s World in 1974. For at least another twenty years, localised repair of a fractured underground wastewater pipe meant a disruptive, expensive and inefficient excavation. The development of no-dig pipe repair technology then began...

Even in the 1990s though, patch repair systems were unreliable; they tended to shrink away from the wall of the pipe and arrive days later at the next manhole. The technology remained untested and water companies remained sceptical.

It quickly became clear that with vastly improved project turnaround times, lower disruption and minimised costs, no-dig technology needed to be perfected – several companies stayed focused on development and a nationally recognised patch repair test was developed by a consortium of water companies, now carried out by the WRc.

The Fernco Pipe Doctor system was among the first to meet these standards.

As companies realised the high performance, and so the business potential of the technology, several more systems arrived; some independently demonstrating their performance, some not, some using higher quality components and some not so.

The Fernco Pipe Doctor has always been at the forefront of the industry, and still is:

  • The most advanced use of a kit system
  • One of the first to pass the WRc Long Term Hydrostatic Infiltration test
  • A pioneer of patch repairs on a bend
  • One of the few systems which cures in the presence of water
Taking the lead in the industry again, the Fernco Pipe Doctor system now has full WRc Approved status - the first product to achieve this high level of accreditation.

What does this mean?

WRc Approved status means the system has undergone strict and independent auditing and long term testing to verify it performs as it claims and complies with the requirements of The Drain Repair book. Every aspect of the technology, the kit contents, the packaging and the installation instructions has been scrutinised and audited with a view to approving performance, improving usability, making information more clear and instructions more comprehensive. High pressure jetting resistance was tested in accordance with WIS 4-35-01 at a jetting pressure of 280bar/4000psi. This typically exceeds the pressure for both blockage removal and cleaning.

The contractor has the peace of mind that a correctly installed patch repair will perform as promised, and has a set of independently assessed installation instructions to provide all the guidance they need. Pitching for business becomes easier; the contractor can emphasise that an independently approved system is being used. The system is allocated a unique WRc Approved number; full details of the system, its auditing and the approval can be reviewed on the WRc website.

The Fernco Pipe Doctor does what it says on the box, and to an exceptionally high standard – guaranteed.

So when you next need to perform an outstanding no-dig patch repair, ensure you’re not the only one who thinks it’s outstanding - make certain the WRc agree.
