Case Studies: Water Management
A Domestic Rainwater Harvesting System

03/10/2011

To support up to a 50% saving on mains water usage, a South Yorkshire property has installed a retrofit rainwater harvesting system.

Stormbreaker, the rainwater harvesting system from Fernco Environmental, was the ideal system for use at this property. Arriving preassembled with 11 components for minimum working time, the Fernco Environmental Rainwater Tank installation team installed the system within one day, coming back the following day to plumb the system into the household. Most alternatives would require the pump, cabling, backwater valve and other accessories to be delivered separately.

Accounting for the average annual rainfall of of the area - 824.7mm - and the roof area of the property, it was calculated that the 2,400 litre rainwater tank would harvest sufficient rainwater to serve the family of 5 each flushing the WC 3 times per day, in addition to some of their laundry and gardening activities.

A Stormbreaker Soakaway was also used as an overflow for the tank, ensuring a period of excessive and unexpected rainfall does not overfill the system, and a Kessel Backwater Valve was used within the system preventing water from flowing back into the tank. Flexseal Drain Couplings were also used to connect the tank outlet onto the perforated pipe, which was placed over the soakaway units.
